How to Celebrate Catechetical Sunday in Your Parish How to Celebrate Catechetical Sunday in Your Parish
Each year, the USCCB sets a catechetical theme for Cate chetical Sunday, which is the third Sunday of September. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the important roles of parents, grandparents, guardians, catechists, RCIA teams, and all who assist them in teaching the faith to our children and adults. Catechetical Sunday is a chance for each of us to rededicate ourselves to this mission as a community of faith.

This year, the Archdiocese of Detroit will celebrate Catechetical Sunday with the theme Growing as Disciples of Jesus. Grow is the second stage of the Encounter, Grow, Witness paradigm as outlined in Guidepost 9 of Unleash the Gospel , which is the focus of this year’s Parish Day of Renewal and through the Advent season.

The following resources are available to parishes to promote Growing as Disciples of Jesus:
  • A commissioning prayer for Catechetical Sunday
  • Downloadable prayer cards for catechists, parents, grandparents, and guardians, and for families
  • Certificate of Commissioning for catechists
  • Classroom resources for faith formation leaders to help children encounter Christ through the 2019-2020 school year
  • Sample bulletin article
We invite you to promote and celebrate Catechetical Sunday 2020 on Sunday, September 20th, and discuss with your parish staff the best way to celebrate this day at your parish.
